Robinson, Edward

(1794–1863) philologist, geographer, biblical scholar; born in Southington, Conn. He trained in Hebrew studies and geography at Hamilton College and in Germany. After touring the Holy Land, he published the first scholarly investigation of the region, Biblical Researches in Palestine… (3 vols. 1841), an epoch-making work of historical geography. After 1837 he was professor of biblical literature at Union Theological Seminary, New York.
