Posessionnye Manufaktury
Posessionnye Manufaktury
(possessional manufactures), privately owned manufactures in Russia based on posessionnoe pravo (possessional law).
The possessional manufactures were intended to stimulate the development of industry during the period when large-scale manufacturing was emerging. Most possessional enterprises were those in the metallurgical, cloth, and linen industries. Socioeconomically the possessional manufactures were similar to votchina (patrimonial estate) manufactures. V. I. Lenin considered the cloth-manufacturing enterprises of the possessional- votchina type “an example of that specific phenomenon of Russian history—the employment of serf labor in industry” (Poln. sobr. sock, 5th ed., vol. 3, p. 471). Possessional manufactures existed until the 1860’s.
