(Theory and Practice of Physical Culture), a monthly scientific and theoretical journal published by the Committee on Physical Culture and Sports of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. It has been published in Moscow since 1925. In the first year of its existence, it appeared as a supplement to Izvestiia fizicheskoi kul’tury (News of Physical Culture); it became an independent journal in 1926. The present title was first used from 1926 to 1931 and was restored in 1937. In the 1930’s the journal had a popular science character. Its orientation shifted to methods in 1945, and it became a scientific and theoretical journal in 1966. The journal deals with scientific, methodological, and organizational problems of physical culture and sport in the USSR and abroad. Circulation, 18,000 (1978).
