a city in Ecuador and capital of Manabí Province. Population, 49,700 (1970). Portoviejo has a railroad station. It is the commercial center of a logging region and of an agricultural region that grows cacao, coffee, sugarcane, and cotton. Panama hats, hammocks, and other handmade articles are produced. Portoviejo was founded in the 1530’s.
