Stupin, Aleksandr Vasil’evich

Born Feb. 13 (24), 1776; died July 31 (Aug. 12), 1861, in Arzamas. Russian painter and art instructor.

From 1800 to 1802, Stupin studied with I. A. Akimov at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He was the founder and leader of the Arzamas school of painting (1802–61). In 1809, Stupin was made an academician in recognition of the work of his school. Of his own works, mainly art studies executed in a strict academic style have been preserved. His works are housed in the Russian Museum in Leningrad and the Art Museum in Gorky.
