[′sek·tər ‚disk] (physics) A device used to reduce the intensity of a beam of light or other electromagnetic radiation by an accurately known amount; in its simplest form, it consists of a circular, opaque disk with one or more sectors cut out of it, rapidly rotating in the path of the beam.
