(spôr`ədēz, spŏr`–), islands, E and SE Greece, in the Aegean Sea. They have been grouped variously at different times. The Northern Sporades are generally understood to include Skiáthos, Skópelos, Alónnisos, Skíros, and some smaller islands off the coast of Évvoia and W Turkey; the first three form the regional unit of the Sporades. Límnos and Lesbos are sometimes also included. The Southern Sporades are generally understood to include Ikaría, the Foúrnoi (or Fourni) group, Sámos, the Dodecanese, and sometimes Khíos. The main products of the Sporades are olive oil, wine, and citrus fruit.
