The reflex emerges at 11 weeks in utero, is fully present at birth, and usually inhibited by 2-3 months of life; replaced by the pincer grip at 36 weeks of age. When retained beyond 4-5 months of life, it impedes both manual dexterity and manipulatory activities. One of a group of reflexes that affect handwriting, speech, and articulation.
