[¦rād·ē·ō·ə′küs·tik ′rānj·iŋ] (engineering) A method for finding the position of a vessel at sea; a bomb is exploded in the water, and the sound of the explosion transmitted through water is picked up by the vessel and by shore stations, other vessels, or buoys whose positions are known; the received sounds are transmitted instantaneously by radio to the surveying vessel, and the elapsed times are proportional to the distances to the known positions. Abbreviated RAR. Also known as radioacoustic position finding; radioacoustic sound ranging.
