Porter, A. Kingsley Porter, A. (Arthur) Kingsley(1883–1933) architectural historian; born in Stamford, Conn. He taught at Yale (1915–19) and Harvard (1920–33). His survey, Medieval Architecture: Its Origins and Development (1909), the first scholarly history of its subject by an American, freshly illuminated Lombard Romanesque architecture in what had been regarded as the cultural void between Roman and Renaissance art. Also an expert on Romanesque sculpture, he is regarded as perhaps the greatest American historian of medieval art. |
