Studios of the Moscow Art Theater

theater-studios organized in affiliation with the Moscow Art Theater to conduct experiments in theater techniques and to train actors according to the traditional methods of the Moscow Art Theater.

In 1912, K. S. Stanislavsky and L. A. Sulerzhitskii founded the First Studio of the Moscow Art Theater to train young actors in the Stanislavsky method. Opened in 1913, the studio was reorganized as the second Moscow Art Theater in 1924. The Second Studio of the Moscow Art Theater was founded in 1916 by the stage director V. L. Mchedelov. Actors and actresses trained in this studio, including A. K. Tarasova, K. N. Elanskaia, O. N. Androvskaia, N. P. Khmelev, and M. M. Ianshin, joined the Moscow Art Theater in 1924. In 1920, the Vakhtangov Studio was reorganized as the Third Studio of the Moscow Art Theater (opened 1921), which later became the Evg. Vakhtangov Theater. The Fourth Studio of the Moscow Art Theater was formed in 1921 from a group of actors of the Moscow Art Theater. Headed by G. S. Burdzhalov, V. V. Luzhskii, and E. M. Raevskaia, the studio became a theater in 1924 and was named the Realistic Theater in 1927.

The Moscow Art Musical Studio was founded in 1919 by VI. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko as a part of the Moscow Art Theater with the aim of introducing realism into opera and freeing the operatic stage from trite conventions; this studio became the V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater in 1926. The Studio on Povarskaia Street, founded in 1905 by Stanislavsky and directed by V. E. Meyerhold, was an experimental workshop.
