Basic Dyes

organic dyes that have the properties of bases and contain the amino group NRʹRʺ (Rʹ and Rʺ denote hydrogen or a low-molecular-weight alkyl). In terms of chemical structure, basic dyes are mainly aryl-methane, quinonimine, and azo dyes.

Basic dyes are brilliant dyes of all colors, but they are not fast and therefore are virtually not used for dyeing cotton textiles. They are widely used in dyeing paper, leather, and wood, as well as in the preparation of printing inks. The salts of basic dyes and phosphotungstomolybdic acid (fanal varnishes) are widely used in the printing industry.

Basic dyes are more colorfast in polyacrylonitrile fibers; special basic dyes used for this purpose, called cation dyes, are brilliant and highly fast.
