PorphyraPorphyraa genus of red algae of the class Bangiophyceae. The lamellar thallus reaches 1 m in height and consists of one or two layers of haploid cells. Reproduction is by monospores, which form new thalli, and by carpospores, which germinate into haploid monostichous filaments that form monospores. Of the 25 species, ten are found in the USSR. The algae grow in seas of the temperate zones. They are used as food and are widely cultivated in Japan and China. Porphyra
