Pai-tou Shan

(Chinese); Paektu-san (Korean); (in both languages, “White-headed Mountain”), an active volcano on the Ch’ang-pai Shan plateau on the border between the Chinese People’s Republic and the Korean Democratic People’s Republic.

The volcano’s elevation is 2,744 m. It is composed mainly of white pumice (hence its name). The last eruption occurred in 1904, when explosions were accompanied by a discharge of rocks and gases. Lake T’ien Ch’ih is located in the crater of the volcano. The sources of the Sungari, Tumen, and Yalu rivers are on Pai-t’ou Shan.
