Paint spray guns, which operate by centrifugal force, are called mechanical spray guns. Air guns are more widely used. The main assemblies used in spray painting are a paint compressor and a housing with a handle and a nozzle through which the paint mixture is sprayed.

Paint spray guns are either low-pressure or high-pressure. The former develop pressures of up to 90 kilonewtons/m² (kN/ m²), or 0.9 kilograms-force/cm²; the latter develop pressures greater than 90 kN/m². In the USSR, spray guns are manufactured in three standard sizes, capable of covering 50, 300, and 600 m²/hr, respectively.
