A concrete, steel, or wood column, usually less than 2 ft (0.6 m) in diameter, which is driven or otherwise introduced into the soil, usually to carry a vertical load or to provide lateral support. 2.See carpet pile. 3. A term used to indicate the number of rooms in a house from front to rear; for example, a double-pile house has two rooms between the façade and the rear wall of the house.
