Location:Northeastern Oregon and western Idaho. Accessible by I-84; US 26 and 95; OR 3, 7, 245, 82, and 86. Nearby cities/towns include Baker City, Halfway, Unity, Enterprise, La Grande, Union, and Riggins, ID.
Facilities:71 campgrounds, group camps, picnic areas, 6 cabins, trails (2,775 miles), 4 winter recreation areas, scenic drives, boat launches.
Activities:Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV riding, wildlife viewing, snowmobiling, cross-country and downhill skiing.
Special Features:Comprising 294 miles of wild and scenic rivers, glacial lakes, 4 wilderness areas (Eagle Cap, North Fork John Day, Hell's Canyon, and Monument Rock), remnants of historic gold mining operations, and prehistoric sites. Points of interest include Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (see separate entry in this section) and the Wallowa Lake Tramway, which transports visitors 3,700 vertical feet to the summit of Mt. Howard.
