Thompson, Homer

Thompson, Homer (Armstrong)

(1906– ) archaeologist; born in Devlin, Ontario, Canada. He was educated at the University of Michigan (Ph.D. 1929) and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He was simultaneously professor of classical archaeology at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and field director of the Athenian agora (1947–77). An expert on the history and monuments of Athens, his Guide to the Athenian Agora (1976) was admired by both scholars and nonspecialists.
