释义 | Thompson EdwardP.Thompson EdwardP.(1924-93) British Marxist social historian, also associated with the NEW LEFT and as an activist leader of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. His reputation as an outstanding historian rests especially on The Making of the English Working Class (1963), a seminal approach to historiography which helped to inspire a new generation of labour and social historians to focus on ‘history from below’. This consists of an history not of the activities of political élites and dominant classes but a careful reconstruction of the consciousness and action of individuals and groups usually previously hidden from view in conventional history. It is a feature of Thompson's historical writing – which also includes Whigs and Hunters (1975) – that as well as reporting the past, it is also an engagement with the present, as in his influential article ‘Time, Work-Discipline and Industrial Capitalism’ (1967) where he speculates on the possibility of a synthesis of old and new time-senses in a future socialist society Thompson belonged to the humanist wing of Marxism, emphasizing the role of human AGENCY, which in The Poverty of Theory and Other Essays (1978) led him to take issue with the structuralist Marxism of Louis ALTHUSSER. Thompson's writings on nuclear disarmament, e.g. Protest and Survive (1981) and Beyond the Cold War (1982), stressed the scope for breaking free from COLD WAR logic. |
