Waddington, William Henry,
1826–94, French statesman and archaeologist, of English descent. Waddington was minister of education (1876–77) and was appointed foreign minister in 1877. He represented France at the Congress of Berlin (1878). In 1879 he headed a cabinet but was soon replaced by Charles de FreycinetFreycinet, Charles de, 1828–1923, French statesman. A mining engineer, he helped Léon Gambetta organize resistance to the Germans during the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71). Later he was elected (1876) to the senate.
