Skandagupta

Skandagupta

ruler of North India from 455 to 467; from the Gupta dynasty. At the beginning of his reign, Skandagupta apparently repulsed an invasion by the tribes of Pushyamitra from West India, which had begun during the reign of his predecessor, Kumaragupta I. Skandagupta was forced to wage an exhausting war against the Ephthalite Huns, who had invaded Northwest India. He was victorious and was able to keep his domains. However, the debasement of Gupta coins in the mid-fifth century indicates that the resources of the empire were depleted. [23–1464–]
