Pacific Saury
(Cololabis saira), a marine pelagic fish of the family Scombridae. The body reaches a length of 40 cm and a weight of 170 g. The Pacific saury is distributed along the Asiatic and American coasts of the Pacific Ocean within the temperate and subtropical zones of the northern hemisphere. In the USSR the fish is found in the Sea of Japan, in the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, and in the Pacific Ocean (near the Kuril Islands). The Pacific saury feeds on plankton. It spawns in the southern part of the Sea of Japan in late winter and early spring. The eggs, which develop underwater, are ellipsoid and have several filaments at the superior pole. The Pacific saury is commercially fished by the USSR, Korea, and Japan.
