Spiro, Melford Elliot

(1920– ) cultural anthropologist; born in Cleveland. Educated at the University of Minnesota (B.A. 1941) and Northwestern (Ph.D. 1950), he taught at Washington University (St. Louis), the University of Connecticut, and Chicago before becoming chairman of the anthropology department at the University of California: San Diego, in 1968. His publications include Kibbutz: Venture in Utopia (1955) and Kinship and Marriage in Burma (1977).
