Spirochaetes

Gram-negative (see GRAM'S STAIN) spiral-shaped BACTERIA that may be free-living, parasitic (see PARASITE).or PATHOGENIC. They are motile and can be AEROBES, FACULTATIVE ANAEROBES or anaerobes. They include some important PATHOGENS, for example, Treponema pallidum, the cause of SYPHILIS, and Leptospira species that cause Leptospirosis, a disease spread by water contaminated with the spirochaetes.
