Vladimir Semenovich Kruzhkov

Born June 3 (16), 1905, in St. Petersburg. Soviet philosopher. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1953. Member of the CPSU since 1925.

Kruzhkov graduated from the N. K. Krupskaia Academy of Communist Upbringing in 1931 and completed graduate work in the philosophy department of the Communist University of Teachers of the Social Sciences in 1933. He began teaching philosophy in 1932. From 1944 to 1949, Kruzhkov was director of the Institute of Marx, Engels, and Lenin under the Central Committee of the CPSU. Between 1949 and 1955 he was attached to the Central Committee of the CPSU, first as a deputy head and later the head of a department. From 1955 to 1961, Kruzhkov was a professor at the University of the Urals, and from 1961 to 1973 he served as director of the Institute of Art History under the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. His main scientific works deal with the history of Russian philosophy, the history of aesthetics, and the Leninist stage of Marxist philosophy. He edited the selected philosophical writings of D. I. Pisarev (1944) and of M. A. Antonovich (1945). In 1952, Kruzhkov was awarded the State Prize of the USSR for his book The World View ofN. A. Dobroliubov (1950).
