Wałbrzych sustained great damage during World War II, after which it passed from Germany to Poland.Walbrzycha city in southwestern Poland. Located in Wroclaw Województwo (province), in the Sudeten Mountains. Population, 126,000 (1968). Railroad junction. Walbrzych is the center of the Walbrzych (Lower Silesian) Coal Basin; it is the oldest in Europe, and coal has been mined there since the 14th century. Coking coal is also extracted, and the production of coke amounts to approximately 2 million tons per year. Walbrzych has a thermal electric power plant and heavy machine building (mining equipment), sulfuric-acid, glass, and porcelain-pottery industries.
