polychlorinated biphenyl

(ˌpɒlɪˈklɔːrɪˌneɪtɪd) n (Elements & Compounds) any of a group of compounds in which chlorine atoms replace the hydrogen atoms in biphenyl: used in industry in electrical insulators and in the manufacture of plastics; a toxic pollutant that can become concentrated in animal tissue. Abbreviation: PCB
Translations

polychlorinated biphenyl

polychlorinated biphenyl

or

PCB,

any of a group of organic compounds originally widely used in industrial processes but later found to be dangerous environmental pollutants. Polychlorinated biphenyl is a fat-soluble, water-insoluble hydrocarbon containing chlorine. It is extremely stable, withstanding temperatures of up to 1,600°F; (870°C;), is fire-resistant, and has been used as a heat-transfer and insulating fluid in cooling systems and electrical equipment; it has also been used in sealants, rubber, paints, plastics, printing ink, and insecticides. The chemical has entered the environment largely as a pollutant from equipment leaks, the weathering of many materials that contain PCB, and through interaction with food products. PCBs are not readily biodegradable. Production has been banned in several industrialized countries; the United States stopped producing PCBs in 1977.

polychlorinated biphenyl

[¦päl·i′klȯr·ə‚nād·əd bī′fen·əl] (organic chemistry) Any member of the group of chlorinated isomers of biphenyl. Abbreviated PCB.

biphenyl

[bi-fen´il] diphenyl.polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) any of various brominated derivatives of biphenyl; uses and toxic hazards are similar to those of polychlorinated biphenyls. They typically are deposited in body fat stores and are rarely mobilized except through lactation.polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) any of various chlorinated derivatives of biphenyl, toxic and carcinogenic nonbiodegradable compounds used as heat-transfer agents and electrical insulators; they are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and those with a lower percentage of chlorine are associated with a higher toxicity but are more readily excreted.

pol·y·chlo·rin·at·ed bi·phen·yl (PCB),

biphenyl in which some or all of the hydrogen atoms attached to ring carbons are replaced by chlorine atoms; a [probable] human carcinogen and teratogen.

pol·y·chlo·rin·at·ed bi·phe·nyl

(polē-klōri-nā-tĕd bī-fenil) Agent in which some or all of the hydrogen atoms attached to ring carbons are replaced by chlorine atoms; possible human carcinogen and teratogen.
