释义 | ozena
OzenaOzena(also atrophic rhinitis), a chronic disease characterized by severe atrophy of the nasal mucosa and the formation in the nose of thick crusts with an unpleasant odor. The atrophy also spreads to the olfactory region, and for this reason those affected with ozena usually lack a sense of smell. Sometimes the odor ozena produces is so offensive that those suffering from the disease find it difficult to associate with others. In some cases, the disease also spreads to the lower respiratory tract—the pharynx and larynx. The causes have been insufficiently studied. Treatment consists of softening and removing the crusts by means of salves, drops, and irrigation. ozenaozena[o-ze´nah]a·troph·ic rhi·ni·tisozenaPue-nez, Stinknase ENT A mucopurulent nasal discharge in chronic atrophic rhinitis, seen in long-standing systemic disease–eg, iron-deficiency anemia or chronic local infection, described in southern Europe; the etiologic role of.Klebsiella ozaenae is speculative as this organism is sensitive to broad-spectrum antibiotics, while ozena is refractory to antibiotic therapyo·ze·na(ō-zē'nă)Synonym(s): ozaena. ozena
