adrenal cortical insufficiency Failure of the ADRENAL CORTEX to secrete adequate hormones. This may be due to congenital deficiency of the enzymes necessary for the synthesis of the adrenal hormones, or to disease of the gland, as in ADDISON'S DISEASE. The condition is treated by long-term steroid replacement therapy. |
