Sittang

a river in Burma. The Sittang measures approximately 500 km and drains an area of 34,500 sq km. It flows from north to south in a valley between the Pegu Mountains and the Shan Plateau and empties into the Gulf of Martaban of the Andaman Sea, forming an estuary. It has a monsoonal regime, with high water in the summer. The average flow rate is approximately 1,300 cu m per sec. The lower Sittang is subject to the influence of sea tides for a distance of 80 km from the mouth. The Sittang carries large quantities of suspended detrital material. It is navigable in the lower course by small boats and is connected by a canal with the Pegu River. The city of Toungoo is situated on the river. Rice is grown in the valley. [23–1426–]
