Van Hise, Charles

Van Hise, Charles (Richard)

(1857–1918) college president, geologist; born in Fulton, Wis. A specialist in pre-Cambrian and metamorphic geology and a member of the U.S. Geologic Survey, he taught at the University of Wisconsin (1879–1903). As Wisconsin's president (1903–18), he oversaw a major expansion and developed an extension service, creating an influential model for other state universities.
