Vangengeim, Aleksei Feodos’evich

 

Born Oct. 22, 1881; died Aug. 17, 1942. Soviet meteorologist. Became a member of the CPSU in 1928.

Vangengeim studied at Moscow University and the Moscow Agricultural Institute (1900-10). In 1928 he became a professor at Moscow State University. From 1920 to 1924 he worked at the Main Physical Observatory. From 1924 to 1929 he was deputy head of the Central Scientific Board of the People’s Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR. From 1929 to 1934 he was a member of the Presidium of the State Scholarly Council. In 1929 he became the first director of the Hydrometeorological Service of the USSR, which was organized on his initiative. The Weather Bureau of the USSR was created under his direction.
