a city in western Colombia, on the Atrato River. The administrative center of Chocó Province. Population, 50,000 (1971). Quibdó is linked by highway with Bogotá and is the center of a mining region (gold, platinum, and other metals). Important economic activities include forest industries, such as harvesting rubber and gathering ivory nuts; wine-making and sawmilling are also developed. Quibdó was founded in 1654.
