Strongbow, Richard

(Richard de Clare, second Earl of Pembroke). Born circa 1130(?); died Apr. 20, 1176, in Dublin. Count and one of the first English conquerors of Ireland.

Under the pretext of aiding the king of Leinster, Diarmaid MacMurchada, who had been driven out by mutinous chieftains, Strongbow landed near Waterford in August 1170 and began the conquest of the southeastern coast of Ireland. In September 1170 he occupied Dublin. Upon the death of Diarmaid, Strongbow proclaimed himself the King’s successor (May 1171). In 1174 he suffered a defeat at the hands of the Irish at Waterford.
