It has an elevation of 926 m and rises 2,700 m above sea level. The volcano consists of an inactive crumbling andesitic crater and a more contemporary truncated basaltic crater. The active crater, located at an elevation of more than 700 m, spews out volcanic bombs and light, ashless gases every ten to 20 minutes. The volcanic products are illuminated from below by the molten lava and are visible over great distances at night. For this reason, Stromboli is called the beacon of the Mediterranean. Powerful eruptions with trachytic-basaltic lava flows are sometimes observed. The volcano last erupted in 1971. The term “strombolian” is used to describe volcanoes whose eruptions are similar to those of Stromboli (seeVOLCANOES). StromboliStromboli |
