Bifurcation of Rivers
Bifurcation of Rivers
the division of a river and its channels into two branches which do not rejoin farther on and which fall into separate watersheds. This bifurcation most often arises as a result of the erosion of flat watersheds by surface waters. Seasonal bifurcation may be observed, in which waters from one watershed flood into another during high water. The most famous bifurcated river system is the Orinoco River (in South America).
