Political and Administrative Map

Political and Administrative Map

a map that shows the political and administrative organization of countries or of parts of countries. Such a map shows the political and administrative divisions of the mapped territory, that is, the disposition of territorial political and administrative units. It also indicates the form of state organization and administration; the political, strategic, and administrative centers; and lines of communication of local, national, and international significance. Political and administrative maps are used for reference, for organizational, economic, and educational purposes, and for the compilation of other types of maps.

In the USSR, national political and administrative maps, at scales of 1:4,000,000, 1:5,000,000, and 1:8,000,000 are published systematically, as well as political and administrative maps of the Union republics, autonomous republics, krais, and oblasts, at scales ranging from 1:600,000 to 1:2,500,000.
