SPINK Serine protease inhibitors, Kazal type. Any of a family of genes (5 are confirmed: SPINK1, -2, -4, -5, -6; 3 more SPINKs are postulated), which encode trypsin ihibitors in various tissues. As an example, SPINK1 on chromosome 5q32 encodes a trypsin inhibitor, secreted by pancreatic acini which appears to prevent trypsin-catalysed activation of zymogens in the pancreas. Abnormal SPINK1 mutations are linked to hereditary pancreatitis and tropical calcific pancreatitis. |
