In N central CA on OR border; organized Mar 22, 1852 from Klamath and Shasta counties, and in 1874 annexed part of Klamath County. Site of Mt. Shasta, 14,162 ft. Name Origin: Possibly Chinook from Cree for 'bob-tailed horse,' or French six cailloux 'six boulders.'
