voice over Wi-Fi

Making phone calls over a Wi-Fi network. Voice over Wi-Fi (Vo-Fi) provides enhancements to the 802.11 Wi-Fi standards for handling the real-time environment of voice. With a single mode Vo-Fi phone, users make calls only within a Wi-Fi hotspot. Dual-mode phones can seamlessly switch between the cellular carrier and a Wi-Fi hotspot if the hotspot has been pre-registered in the phone.

Also called "voice over wireless LAN" (Vo-WLAN), "Wi-Fi telephony," "Wi-Fi calling," "wireless VoIP" and "wireless IP telephony." See Wi-Fi.
