Bhilai

 

(also Bhilainagar), a city in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. Part of the Durg-Bhilai urban district. Population, 204,800 (1967). Bhilai is one of the country’s major centers for ferrous metallurgy, which has grown with the construction of a metallurgical combine with a capacity of 2.5 million tons of steel a year. (This was constructed with Soviet aid.) The metallurgical industry is based on local deposits of iron and manganese ores, in addition to the bituminous coal of Korba and the valley of the Damodar River. In building the new city, Indian architects were influenced by the work of contemporary world architecture.
