spinal cord resuscitation

Orthopedics Any maneuver used to ↓ 2º neurologic sequelae of acute spinal cord trauma, due to hypoxia, edema, and aberrant cell membrane potential Management Maintain BP, respiration; ↓ spinal deformity ASAP to relieve cord deformation; stabilize injured segment of cervical spine; IV steroids–bolus, infusion of methylprednisolone, which may suppress cell membrane breakdown by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and hydrolysis at injury site, which ↓ vasoreactive products of arachidonic acid metabolism and ↑ blood flow at site of injury; use of cerebrogangliosides–eg, Sygen–GM-1, to facilitate neurologic recovery. See Spinal cord injury.
