Polevskoi

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR. Located 8 km from the Polevskoi railroad station on the Sverdlovsk-Cheliabinsk line, 50 km southwest of Sverdlovsk. Population, 60,000 in 1974 (25,000 in 1939).

Polevskoi was founded in the first quarter of the 18th century. It has developed metallurgical and chemical industries. The Severskii Pipe Factory produces pipes, high-grade steel, and tinplate. Other enterprises process cryolite and produce machinery, marble items, and reinforced-concrete articles. In the southern section of the city is Dumnaia Gora, on which there is a monument to the heroes of the Civil War of 1918–20 who died in the battles with Kolchak. Many of P. P. Bazhov’s stories deal with Dumnaia Gora and the Polevskoi area.
