a horizontal timber resting on the tiebeams of a roof and receiving the ends of the rafters. It differs from the plate in not resting on the wall.

A horizontal timber resting on the ends of the tie beams of a roof; supports the lower ends of the common rafters, directly above the wall; raises the rafters above the top plate of the wall.
