Queckenstedt sign

(kvek′ĕn-shtet″) [Hans H. G. Queckenstedt, Ger. neurologist, 1876–1918] A test formerly used to diagnose lumbar spinal stenosis, in which a lumbar puncture is performed and the opening pressure measured, followed by manual compression of both jugular veins, causing a rise in intracranial pressure. In healthy people, the pressure rises rapidly on compression and then disappears when the compression is released. In those with vertebral canal block, the cerebrospinal fluid pressure is scarcely affected by compression of the veins of the neck, unilaterally or bilaterally.
