Template

A pattern of sheet material, used as a guide for setting out work and in repeating patterns of painted ornamentation. Also, an outline of fixtures and graphic shapes and symbols.

Template

(1) A flat, two-dimensional scale photographic model of a piece of equipment or an instrument, machine, or structural component. Templates are used in the design of test benches, control boards, and machine tools and in the planning of research and industrial units and complexes, buildings, and installations. The development of designs using templates is called planar breadboarding. In one method of designing using a template, the drawings showing the layout of finished elements are mounted on a raster, which is a scaled grid applied to a transparent film. The use of a template reduces the volume of graphic work, improves the quality, and reduces the time required for design.

(2) In general metallurgy, a flat sample cut out of a metal article or stock and designed for disclosing and studying the macro-structure of the article. For this purpose the template is polished and then etched with solutions of acids and alkalies.

Template

a thin, transparent plastic sheet with holes whose shapes correspond to topographic symbols, conventional graphic representations of electrical elements, electronic and ion devices, and machine parts and assemblies for communications, remote control, automation, computer technology, and power engineering. A template makes it possible simply to trace the outline of the corresponding hole instead of constructing complex geometric figures. This greatly reduces the time required for graphic work and makes symbols uniform.

template

[′tem·plət] (computer science) A prototype pattern against which observed patterns are matched in a pattern recognition system. A computer program that is used in conjunction with an electronic spreadsheet to solve a particular type of problem. (engineering) A two-dimensional representation of a machine or other equipment used for building layout design. A guide or a pattern used in manufacturing items. Also spelled templet. (cell and molecular biology) The macromolecular model for the synthesis of another macromolecule.

template, templet

1. A pattern, usually of sheet material, used as a guide for setting out work and in repeating dimensions. 2. A piece of stone, metal, or timber placed in a wall to receive the impost of a beam, girders, etc., and to distribute its load. 3. A beam or plate spanning a door or window space to sustain joists and transfer their load to piers. 4. One of the wedges in a building block.

template

(document processing)A document that contains parameters, identified by some special syntax, that are replaced byactual arguments by the template processing system. Forexample:

template

(1) A pre-designed document or data file formatted for common purposes such as a fax, invoice or business letter. If the document contains an automated process, such as a word processing macro or spreadsheet formula, then the programming is already written and embedded in the appropriate places. It becomes a custom document after filling in the blanks with your data. See style sheet and document.

(2) A model of an application that is customized by the system designer. See template-based application.

(3) A plastic or stiff paper form placed over the function keys on a keyboard to identify their use.

(4) The canned response option in the Eudora OSE email program. See boilerplate.

In theoretical immunology, an antigen that determines the configuration of combining (antigen-binding) sites of antibody molecules. In genetics, a strand of DNA which specifies the synthesis of a complementary strand of RNA (messenger RNA, ribosomal RNA, or transfer RNA); mRNA in turn serves as a template for the synthesis of nucleic acids or proteins.

tem·plate

(tem'plăt), 1. A pattern or guide that determines the shape of a substance. 2. Metaphorically, the specifying nature of a macromolecule, usually a nucleic acid or polynucleotide, with respect to the primary structure of the nucleic acid or polynucleotide or protein made from it in vivo or in vitro. 3. In dentistry, a curved or flat plate used as an aid in setting teeth. 4. An outline used to trace teeth, bones, or soft tissue to standardize their form. 5.
