polar body, polar nucleus

polar body, polar nucleus

or

polocyte

a small haploid cell, produced during OOGENESIS in female animals, that does not develop into a functional OVUM. During such GAMETOGENESIS, two (or sometimes three) polar bodies are produced, along with one large ovum. A similar situation arises in the development of the egg cell of higher plants, where only one fertile gamete is produced from MEIOSIS. see EMBRYO SAC.
