van der Waals force n. A weak, short-range attractive force between atoms or molecules caused by their dipole moments, often arising in otherwise nonpolar atoms or molecules from a temporary shift of orbital electrons to one side of one atom or molecule. [After Johannes Diderik van der Waals.] van der Waals force (văn′ dər wôlz′) A weak force of attraction between electrically neutral molecules that collide with or pass very close to each other. The van der Waals force is caused by temporary attractions between electron-rich regions of one molecule and electron-poor regions of another.
