单词 van der waals force
释义

van der Waals force

van der Waals force

n. A weak, short-range attractive force between atoms or molecules caused by their dipole moments, often arising in otherwise nonpolar atoms or molecules from a temporary shift of orbital electrons to one side of one atom or molecule.
[After Johannes Diderik van der Waals.]

van der Waals force

(văn′ dər wôlz′) A weak force of attraction between electrically neutral molecules that collide with or pass very close to each other. The van der Waals force is caused by temporary attractions between electron-rich regions of one molecule and electron-poor regions of another. These attractions are very common but are much weaker than chemical bonds. The van der Waals force is what allows water vapor to condense into liquid water.

van der Waals force

[′van dər ‚wȯlz ‚fȯrs] (physical chemistry) An attractive force between two atoms or nonpolar molecules, which arises because a fluctuating dipole moment in one molecule induces a dipole moment in the other, and the two dipole moments then interact. Also known as dispersion force; London dispersion force; van der Waals attraction.

(văn′ dər wôlz′, wälz′)n. A weak attractive force between atoms or nonpolar molecules caused by an instantaneous dipole moment of one atom or molecule that induces a similar temporary dipole moment in adjacent atoms or molecules.
