Quartz Ceramics

Quartz Ceramics

ceramic materials based on quartz glass; they are notable for their good chemical and thermal stability. The main feature distinguishing quartz ceramics from quartz glass is their porosity, which causes lower heat conduction, as well as lower mechanical strength and density.

Quartz ceramic articles are molded by slip casting, semidry pressing, and hot casting and are fired at a temperature of 1200°-1300°C. Quartz ceramics are used in rocketry for manufacturing missile nose cones, antenna fairings, and missile engine nozzles, as well as for the lining of furnaces, heat exchangers, and other high-temperature units. Foam quartz (a variety of quartz ceramic) is promising as a material for heat protection in space equipment.
