May, Memorial Day weekendA folk festival held on the state capitol grounds in Charleston, W.Va., the Vandalia Gathering serves to exhibit the best of the state's traditional arts, music, dance, crafts, and food. Events include music by fiddlers, banjo players, and lap-dulcimer players, clogging, craft demonstrations, liars' contests, storytelling, and an exhibition of quilts made by West Virginia's top quilters. Held since 1976, the festival attracts about 35,000 people.
